Cerec 3D Single Appointment Porcelain Restorations

Here at Biddeford Saco Dental Associates we are proud to use Cerec 3D advanced technology.  Cerec 3D is a computer-based program that enables us to fabricate for you strong, beautiful all-porcelain restorations that  would normally require at least two appointments (and wearing a temporary restoration) to prepare and deliver.  By utilizing architecture-type CAD-CAM programming, we can prepare your tooth, scan with a small camera, and design your new restoration right on a computer screen.  Shortly thereafter, a ceramic block that has been custom selected for the shape and shade of your tooth is milled, polished, and bonded to your tooth for instant use.

Cerec 3D is most appropriate for certain dental inlays, onlays, and crowns. Teeth that have extensive decay, breakdown, or large previous filling material often require a stronger material than typical filling material to adequately restore form and function.  For these more compromised teeth we use Cerec 3D restorations.  Depending on the application, we may recommend a Cerec 3D restoration versus a traditional crown or onlay.

Advantages of the restorations include:

  • protection and preservation of more of your tooth's natural structural integrity
  • precision fit
  • strength of material
  • durability
  • cost effectiveness

As a patient, you will appreciate:

  • work accomplished in a single visit, thus eliminating a return trip for a lab-fabricated porcelain restoration
  • without a return appointment, further injections are not needed
  • elimination of impression materials in the mouth
  • elimination of temporary crowns or onlays

Here are the three basic steps to porcelain reconstruction of an amalgam-filling compromised tooth.  In this case a four surface onlay is being constructed.

Step 1:
Defective filling and decay is removed and a special optical powder is placed on the tooth.

Step 2:
3D image is captured with a small camera and restoration designed on the screen.  Diamond coated instruments mill a reproduction of the restoration in porcelain.

Step 3:
After polishing the restoration fits exactly.  Then using special bonding agents, the ceramic is fused to your tooth, making for seamless blend with your tooth and maximum strength and beauty!
